Three Guesses.

From three days ago: Child, 9, sexually assaulted in Myer stores.
March 15, 2007 - 3:36PM

Police fear that the man responsible for a sexual assault on a nine-year-old girl in a Melbourne department store may attack again if he is not caught soon.

Two sisters, aged eight and nine, were on their way to the toy section of the Myer department store in Chadstone around 4.30pm yesterday when they were approached by a man at the top of the escalator asking the girls to try on some children's clothing. He then assaulted the nine-year-old in the changing room.

Inspector Simon Clemence from sexual crimes squad told reporters this afternoon that it was likely that the man would strike again if he was not caught.

"We are quite concerned that this individual may attack again, so we want to broadcast his description," he said.

"He's obviously displayed pedophilic behaviour and pedophiles rarely only offend once."

Detectives and uniformed police are currently combing the area and will be distributing flyers to residents and shops.

The man is described as 30-40 years old, with dark skin, of medium build and height. He was wearing a light green top, jeans and carried a shoulder bag.

Police revealed that there had been a sexual assault on a woman in the Chadstone shopping centre in 2004 by a man matching the suspect's description.

Inspector Clemence said that there was no attendant near the changing rooms at the time of the assault, but Myer has fully cooperated with police investigations.

From today: Man Charged over child sex assault.

Man charged over child sex assault

Melbourne police have charged a 22-year-old man over the sexual assault of a nine-year-old girl at Chadstone Shopping Centre in the city's south-east last Wednesday.

The man, who is an exchange student from India, was arrested at his place of work in Clayton, just before 7pm AEDT yesterday.

Detective Acting Inspector Simon Clements from the Sexual Crimes Squad says the man will face court tomorrow, on a range of charges.

"The charges include child abduction, three counts of indecent act with a child, three counts of indecent act in the presence of a child, three counts of indecent assault, and one count of false imprisonment," he said.

Needless to say, the description is remarkably vague. Medium height and build, dark skin, 30-40 years. Well, that describes a goodly sized chunk of the male part of the population.

On the news this evening, the same security footage was shown, this time with the man's face pixellated. (Why do they do that? We've already seen the pictures.)

From the purposeful lack of description in the news, however, I wasn't surprised at the accused's name:Mohammad Khan

If there was any sort of suspicion that the man police were looking for was an anglo, there would have been a heck of a lot more detail in the press. As usual, the dearth of information immediately raises antennae these days.

I was pleased that the commercial tv news I was watching did mention the fellow's name twice.

Just to make sure, I guess.
